Requirements and recommendations for Legacy Edge

Overview

Legacy Edge (EdgeHTML, Spartan, Edge 18 and earlier) is Microsoft's first iteration of a modern browser platform in a long time.

Microsoft's own M365 Apps will officially stop supporting Legacy Edge on March 9, 2021. However, while Hoxhunt add-in will continue to work with Legacy Edge even after August 17, 2021, we strongly recommend our customers to install upgrade to Microsoft's Chromium Edge for optimal performance with Hoxhunt add-in.

In normal situations, no further configuration is needed for optimal Hoxhunt experience. However, there are still ties to Internet Explorer era settings.

Frequently asked questions

Does Legacy Edge have ties to Internet Options?

Sadly, yes. While Internet Options were usually accessed via Internet Explorer, they're actually part of Windows 10, not Internet Explorer. Therefore, there are still settings under Internet Options that can affect Legacy Edge's behaviour.

IMPORTANT: As there is no official documentation from Microsoft about the exact dependencies, please take the following information with a grain of salt. Let us know how our assumptions look!

General tab

Most settings in this tab are related to Internet Explorer so they won’t affect Legacy Edge or other browsers in any way.

Security tab

Some settings from this tab can affect Legacy Edge and other browsers.
Legacy Edge inherited the Zone architecture from Internet Explorer with a few simplifying changes:

• Windows’ five built-in Zones were collapsed to three: Internet (Internet), the Trusted Zone (Intranet+Trusted), and the Local Computer Zone. The Restricted Zone was removed.
• Zone to URLAction mappings were hardcoded into the browser, ignoring group policies and settings in the Internet Control Panel.

Privacy tab

This tab is mostly related to Internet Explorer, so it won’t affect Legacy Edge.

Content tab

This tab is mostly unrelated to Legacy Edge, and it only affects Internet Explorer.

Connections tab

Changes made from the Connections tab affect your entire system including other web browsers such as Legacy Edge.

Programs tab

These add-ons aren’t related to Legacy Edge.

Advanced tab

The list of options mostly affects Internet Explorer, but there are some system-wide options available as well.
