(2025-01) How to re-enable legacy Exchange Online access tokens

This article describes how you can re-enable legacy Exchange Online access tokens in your M365 tenant for a limited time.

There are two possible reasons to re-enable the legacy access tokens:

A) You are unable to update your Hoxhunt add-in to latest version before Microsoft turns off legacy Exchange Online access tokens for all tenants.

B) You have employees whose mailboxes are in Exchange Online and they use a specific Outlook version (volume-licensed 2016 or 2019) which still relies on Internet Explorer.

Case A: You are unable to update your Hoxhunt add-in to latest version before Microsoft turns off legacy Exchange Online access tokens for all tenants

NOTE: You can "turn on" legacy Exchange Online tokens with the cmdlet already now. If you do, then they won't be turned off in February 2025 when Microsoft turns them off for all tenants. See up to date information about the timeline here.

IMPORTANT: By re-enabling the legacy access tokens, you can continue to use Hoxhunt as usual until Microsoft turns legacy Exchange Online access tokens off permanently in June 2025 without the possibility for Exchange admins to turn them on anymore.

Re-enabling the legacy Exchange access tokens is only prolonging the inevitable - you must eventually update your Hoxhunt add-in to latest version.

Case B: You have employees whose mailboxes are in Exchange Online and they use a specific Outlook version (volume-licensed Outlook 2016 or 2019) which still relies on Internet Explorer

If you have employees whose mailboxes are in Exchange Online and they use a specific Outlook version (volume-licensed 2016 or 2019), that version of Outlook is still using Internet Explorer's web engine to run add-in content in Outlook. These users are able to use Nested App Authentication, and a fallback authentication flow has been built for them as recommended by Microsoft. However, based on our experience, the fallback method is cumbersome for the end users (it opens an additional login screen each time Hoxhunt button is used).

Therefore, we suggest customers using Hoxhunt add-in with specific Outlooks to re-enable legacy Exchange access tokens in your tenant before Microsoft turns them off in all Exchange Online tenants on 28.02.2025 (see up to date information here).

IMPORTANT:  By re-enabling the legacy access tokens, "IE users" can continue to use Hoxhunt as usual until Microsoft turns legacy Exchange Online access tokens off permanently in June 2025 without the possibility for Exchange admins to turn them on anymore.

Re-enabling the legacy Exchange access tokens is only prolonging the inevitable, but we at Hoxhunt hope Microsoft will be able to improve the fallback authentication experience for "IE users" before that date, or that our customers have had the time to upgrade affected Outlook clients to non-IE-based ones.
